I have a headcanon that on his days off of work Matsuda dresses specifically in sweatpants, crocs, and the worst kind of novelty shirts imaginable. Which is why I save a picture of every shirt I find that's like that. And also every image deserving of being put on a shirt.

Here are some good examples:

(Bonus namimatsu part that Namikawa is very traumatized that there are crocs in his house for the first time. He's tried taking Matsuda shopping for better clothes on several occasions and it always backfires horribly)

I find Namikawa as a character very interesting but have always wondered the reasoning behind his behaviour. Do you think he acts that way for personal reasons i.e. he cares about his appearance/reputation, he acts like that due to external influences, for example the fact that he is born into money and has a specific act that needs to be upheld or a combination of both? (Longwinded-ish, sorry).

i think it's a combination of all these things!

at his core, namikawa is an ambitious person who desires success above all else. i imagine he developed this trait from a young age, being the son of a rich family led by a very successful businessman. unlike some of his peers, though, this idea of life as a corporate exec was never something he struggled with; i think namikawa always intended to go into business and has never regretted it for a second.

i personally headcanon that part of the reason for namikawa's ambition is the way he viewed his parents at a young age. my thoughts are that his father, despite having the external appearance of a traditional family patriarch, was always really subservient to his mother, and his mother took advantage of this in ways that were at times cruel (like having affairs right under his nose). this led namikawa to foster some contempt for his father for being so easily led, and deep down i think he'd like to surpass his father's position since he views his father as unworthy of his status and reiji needs to "correct" this.

his parents' relationship also led namikawa to view people in a binary: you're either the type of person who uses others or the type of person who is used. there is nothing more loathsome and pathetic than belonging to the latter category, so he does as much as he can to belong to the former. i don't think he's excessively manipulative for the sake of it or anything like that, but he's very concerned with staying on/getting to the top and being in control. (...well, maybe he does enjoy manipulating other people sometimes, but he doesn't usually indulge it in significant ways unless it's serving a greater purpose.)

...ok, moving back away from my namikawa family headcanons. reiji's primary motivation is to be as successful as possible, and so he has to be the type of person who will be successful: talented, intelligent, well-spoken, unrevealing, polite but detached enough to be somewhat intimidating. his behaviors and track record must demand that he is listened to and respected, so they do. in this world, his reputation and image are important, and so is upholding his family's name.

so yes, his behavior as the seemingly perfect, talented business exec is purposeful and done in order to maintain a certain reputation and image, part of which is the image of a good son. both of these are necessary for his general goals. namikawa is concerned with others' opinions of him only to the end that they impact his own prospects; on a personal level, i really don't think he cares what people think about him. if someone perceived him as stupid or weak or useless or what have you, it would upset him (probably by way of annoyance, depending on who it is), but it wouldn't impact his own self-image or anything.

speaking of self-image, i think the line is blurry for namikawa between how many of his behaviors are put-on and how many are genuine. the talented businessman character is so much of who he is that i think even when he's alone or in private, he just acts like that (although he still treats, say, his family differently from a business associate). he decided who he wanted to be, and then he became that person. there is no other namikawa.

Matsuda loves taking care of Namikawa’s hair in any way, brushing it, washing it, braiding it, etc. He’s the kind of guy who shows affection via doing things for other people, affection via actions rather than words. If Namikawa wakes him early enough, he’ll nag him into letting him brush his hair. Namikawa will go through his emails on his laptop or phone that morning whilst Matsuda goes through his hair with a brush. It’s Matsu’s way of showing him that he wants to help him get ready in the morning so he can be his most motivated and successful. Namikawa just lets him because it’s harmless and he likes not having to bend his arm back and spend too much time on it (as someone with long curly hair, it is a nuisance to take care of). 

Quick scenario (on topic I promise)!

Matsuda braids his hair whilst Namikawa has a lot of emails to go through that morning because he’s bored and it’s early in the morning, this is just a random morning in the lives of the two. He does a French braid (another headcanon: Matsu has a little sister who is like a year younger who he is very close to, and he did her hair for her very often so he knows how to do all sorts of braids. he also did babysitting for years as a teen as a part time job! that’s why he’s so good with kids), and he leaves the two little front things stick out. Namikawa just keeps it because it keeps the hair out of his face and he doesn’t really look at it before leaving. He can’t actually see what it is and he doesn’t care.

Everyone in Yotsuba is staring at him strangely, and Namikawa just glares at them in response. They have no business to be staring. One brave junior employee passes by him and goes “I like the braid sir!” and then Namikawa is just like ‘oh well, i don’t care and neither should they’. He keeps it anyway because it keeps it out of his face but everyone who saw him in Yotsuba headquarters absolutely questioned it to themselves. 

Namikawa doesn’t come in with fancy braids or a bun, etc, every day, though he does from time to time (just to make Matsu happy, and because having his hair down is a nuisance).

10. Who sets the other's ringtone to something loud and obnoxious behind their back? Neither.

11. Who rearranges the bookshelf/DVD shelf in alphabetical order? Bold of you to assume Namikawa doesn't already have his shit organized alphabetically.

12. Who does the hands-over-the-eyes "Guess Who" thing? Matsuda! Namikawa never plays along and gets mildly irritated whenever he does it, though.

13. Who points out a dog when they see one? Matsuda again!

14. Who's prone to road rage? Neither because Namikawa barely drives himself and Matsuda is a good boy. No road rage from him.

15. Who's prone to wearing socks indoors (or to sleep)? MATSUDA. He never takes off his dumb socks. Not even during you know what.

33. How do they eat ice cream? What's their favorite flavors? Namikawa eats his out of a bowl with a spoon. His go to flavor is either vanilla or strawberry. Maybe chocolate, too, on occasion. Matsuda is perfectly happy with a cone and any flavor is good to him!

34. Do they go on dates? What are they like? Yes, and they usually just have dinner or do something Namikawa wants to do. Like, watch a theater performance or go to a nice hotel for no reason. Matsuda gets to pick on occasion, but he's happy doing just about anything.

35. What do they smell when they smell amortentia? Matsuda smells fresh. Namikawa always smells like mint or clean linen. Or expensive cologne. When Namikawa smells amortentia, he smells cologne that's a lot cheaper, or deodorant. Matsuda and him smell similar, but Matsuda's scent is a toned down version.

36. Which one is the secret snuggler? Matsuda is a snuggler. There's nothing secret about it. So, Namikawa has to be the secret snuggler by default.

43. What is the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other? Nothing really? They act a little different but everything stays the same for the most part.

44. What are their nicknames for each other? Matsuda's nickname is Detective. Namikawa's nickname is Sir.

45. Who worries the most? Over what? Matsuda worries about Namikawa more because he is kind of a bad guy and he doesn't want anything bad to happen to him because of that. Also, he is a lil' protective. And jealous. Namikawa worries a little. Being a detective, especially one hunting Kira, can be a dangerous job.

Gimme a headcanon on Reiji Namikawa.

Namikawa actually idolized L before this whole thing happened. He admires the image of L that most people imagine - the well-dressed Englishman with sass and mystery and style. When L called him he was fangirling as much as he was freaking out. When the group hired Eraldo Coil, he was excited to meet L before Kira killed him. Once he brought it up to Mido but Mido laughed in his face and ever since he hasn’t said a word.

Reiji Namikawa Sexuality Headcanon: gay gay homosexual gay Gender Headcanon: trans man <3 A ship I have with said character: i have a lot, but namiguchi is my favorite dynamic right now. i talked about this a bit more in the higuchi ask! A BROTP I have with said character: man, namikawa makes allies, not friends. i'll go with ooi here? i like the idea that they've slept together before, but they have a good dynamic as the two people with the most influence at the meetings of death. ideal business partners, those two. A NOTP I have with said character: i don't have a big one for him that i can think of, but i've seen him shipped with light and i'm not really into it. nothing against the people who write it, but it's just not my thing. Gender Headcanon: cis guy A ship I have with said character: ooida! ooida is the definitive ooi ship for me, even though i like some others too. i just think they make a nice pair and i like to headcanon that they start to have a bit of a thing going on before light kills them. A BROTP I have with said character: namikawa! see above :) A NOTP I have with said character: none that i can think of! A random headcanon: he's entertained an interest in space since he was a kid. General Opinion over said character: the most dude of all time

Ayame Mido Sexuality Headcanon: straight. more specifically... Gender Headcanon: trans woman! very closeted about it; she tells shimura a while after higuchi's arrest, and he's the only person she ever tells. the fact that she's into men is not a massive secret but also not something she publicly broadcasts, so most people who know her well think she's a gay man and most people in general think she’s a straight guy because that’s just the base assumption. i want her to be able to transition though... i want it... A ship I have with said character: so there's this AU where light doesn't kill the yotsuba group and mido ends up dating mogi, purely by coincidence. i'm attached to it. it's called momi. A BROTP I have with said character: shimura. man. my headcanon is that they become very close very fast after higuchi dies because they essentially trauma bond over the entire situation. it's ends up kind of unhealthy. they sleep together on one very drunken occasion, but shimura is horrified afterwards and draws a line there. it's strictly platonic, but mido still nurses significant attraction for him. very fun very complicated relationship that i adore A NOTP I have with said character: none that i can think of! Arayoshi Hatori Sexuality Headcanon: bisexual. pretty much closeted.
